The Small Net for A Big Pool of Fish

I think that people think that they have to be big fish, in order to, compete with the big fish in the big niche markets. They also think that because they are just running their own business, by themselves, that they have to carve out a small niche of their own to be successful.

Many times they are wrong on both accounts. You don’t always have to find this small niche with no competition. There probably isn’t any competition because there is nothing good to market in that niche.

You may have a small net, it’s just you running your business and you may go up against some large business. Do you know what? You don’t have to make as much as a large business.

They will have to spend a heck of a lot more money than you on employees, inventory, all the big business expenses etc. You may have some outsourcing, but probably nothing major, unless you choose to.

Think about this. You may be in a huge niche and say that you only reach .001% of the potential customers in that niche. Some niches do millions and millions of dollars in sales each year.

Do you see what I’m saying? You may have a small net, but you’re fishing in a huge lake filled with a lot of fish. Even if you find a small lake and have it all to yourself, what if there aren’t any fish or just minnows? You aren’t going to catch your dinner(make any money in that niche).

It definitely takes some research and testing, but the point is that you shouldn’t always be afraid of the big niches with a lot of competition. Chances are there are not only room for one more, there may be room for hundreds or thousands more.

The bottom line is finding the most profitable niche or niches for you and that is where you can throw most of your time behind. Always be looking to improve your marketing in your niches. It might not be time to leave a niche prematurely, you might just need to tweak your marketing approaches.

You might need to sell something different or you may need to market that product differently. It’s all about testing. That’s the only real way to find out what works and what doesn’t.
