What Product do I Make?

I can’t tell you how many times I get asked this question. “How do I decide what product to come out with?” The first question I ask is, “Well, what niche are you in?” The answer I get back most often is, “I don’t have a niche yet.”

Okay, let’s put the brakes on right there.

What the person is really asking is not how to decide what product to come out with. The question the person is asking is what market do I go after. These are two completely different concepts.

The market, or niche, is the broader segment. For example, let’s take the niche of pets. This is broad in itself as there are so many types of pets, such as dogs, cats, and fish and so on. So let’s take a more narrowed down niche in the pet area.

Let’s take the niche of dogs as pets. Okay, so now at least we know we’re only dealing with dogs. Still, this is a very broad niche.

Think about all the things to do with dogs. You have dog collars, dog food, dog leashes, training manuals for dogs and a host of other items. So even within the niche of dogs as pets, you have a number of different sub niches that you could go after as far as developing a product.

This is where you have to look at your own skills. For example, if you have absolutely no skills as a designer, but can write very well, you might want to think about creating an ebook on dog training.

Conversely, if you can’t write to save your life but are great with design and modeling, you might want to design a line of dog collars. Maybe make hats for dogs.

Okay, so depending on where you want to go with this, how do you actually come up with an idea of what you want to create? The easiest way is simply to look and see what is already out there and see how you can improve on it.

For example; let’s say you are a writer and want to write some kind of an ebook that has to do with dogs. The first thing you should do is look to see what books are already selling.

The reason you want to do this is because you don’t want to come up with something that there may not be a market for. If you were to come up with an idea to write a book titled “How To Teach Your Dog To Dance The Mambo”.

I doubt that you’re going to have very many buyers unless they are simply captured by the novelty. Of course this is a risk when coming up with a novel idea.

Let’s say you wanted to design a dog collar or clothes for dogs. You’d probably want to see what kinds of clothes are already out there. Again, you could design something completely novel, but that would always be a risk. You might want to start with something more mainstream, such as a hat or a coat.

Where do you go to get these ideas? You go to the source. If you’re looking for ebooks, then go to the affiliate programs like www.clickbank.com and see what books they are already selling on dogs. If you’re looking for physical products, then go to a search engine and simply look up something like “dog supplies” and see what the online stores are selling. You’ll get a ton of ideas just from doing these two things.

Third thing to do, check the amount of searches performed each day and month. If you have found a great idea for product, but it only has 1 daily search. It’s probably not a good idea to pursue!

It really isn’t hard to come up with ideas for what kind of product to create. The key is to make sure there is a market for the item. Well, if other people are already selling the item, then there must be a market for the item or they wouldn’t be selling it, right? well that’s where the research comes into play!
